Project Brief

The Carbon Mangrove Restoration & Conservation Project in Ghana aims to rehabilitate 10,000 hectares of degraded wetlands through large-scale mangrove planting, biodiversity enhancement, and community engagement. The objective is to restore critical mangrove ecosystems in the Keta Lagoon, strengthen coastal protection, and promote long-term ecosystem stewardship.

Role Summary

The Project Manager, a senior member of the GrowthAid Ghana Senior Management Team (SMT), will provide strategic leadership, donor liaison, and overall oversight of the Keta Lagoon Blue Carbon Mangrove Restoration & Conservation Project. He/She will ensure that the project achieves its ambitious objectives of restoring degraded wetlands, strengthening coastal resilience, and building long-term community ownership.

The Project Manager, as a GrowthAid Ghana staff member, will lead a senior management team—including Technical/Restoration, Community Engagement, Finance/Admin, and MEL managers—ensuring integration, accountability, and quality delivery. He/She will represent the project at the Project Steering Committee (PSC), with government, communities, and donors, positioning the project as a global model in blue carbon restoration.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide overall vision, leadership, and direction for the project, ensuring coherence with long-term sustainability goals.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Management Team (SMT), ensure that the project team maintains cross-functional integration across technical, community, MEL, and finance units.
  • Develop and oversee annual work plans, budgets, and performance frameworks, ensuring alignment with donor and organizational requirements.
  • Anticipate risks and provide strategic guidance to safeguard project outcomes.

Donor & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the primary liaison with donors, ensuring transparent communication, timely reporting, and strong partnerships.
  • Represent the project at the PSC and in national, regional, and international forums on mangrove restoration, blue carbon, and ecosystem resilience.
  • Foster constructive relationships with the Government of Ghana, traditional authorities, local assemblies, technical partners, and civil society actors.

Oversight of Technical & Programmatic Units

  • Provide strategic direction to the Technical/Restoration Lead, Community Engagement Manager, MEL Manager, and Finance/Admin Manager.
  • Approve technical and operational strategies developed by unit heads, ensuring consistency with project objectives and best practice.
  • Ensure quality assurance, compliance, and adaptive learning across all program areas

Team Management & Capacity Building

  • Build, mentor, and manage a multidisciplinary senior management team, cultivating a culture of excellence, accountability, and inclusivity.
  • Strengthen institutional capacity for long-term sustainability by nurturing leadership and succession planning within the project team

Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL)

  • Oversee MEL systems and ensure integration of ecological, social, and economic indicators into decision-making.
  • Present consolidated, high-level reports to donors and the PSC, drawing on inputs from unit leads.
  • Promote adaptive management and foster knowledge sharing across stakeholders and global restoration networks.

Qualifications & Experience

Education:

 Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, Coastal/Marine Ecology, Climate Change, or related field.

Experience:

  • At least 10 years of senior-level leadership in large-scale coastal restoration, wetland/mangrove management, or complex environmental projects.
  • Demonstrated track record in leading multi-stakeholder, multi-year programs with budgets exceeding USD 5M.
  • Proven ability to engage donors, government, and communities at the highest levels.
  • Strong experience in supervising technical specialists and integrating cross-disciplinary work streams.
  • Prior experience in Ghana or similar West African ecosystems is an asset
