GrowthAid on Thursday, October 8, 2020 visited five communities in the Yilo Krobo Municipality to confirm that indeed they are water and sanitation stressed communities who need intervention.

The visit as part of the partnership that GrowthAid has with District and Municipal Assemblies to provide safe water, improved sanitation, and hygiene facilities in communities to help in the prevention and management of identified neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The process begins by the participating Assemblies identifying needy communities for inclusion in GrowthAid’s annual plan for the year. These are then validated and compared with the Ghana Health Service’ list of communities where NTDs are prevalent. To ensure ownership, communities apply to GrowthAid and their respective Assemblies. These applications are vetted and prioritized according to need by the District Assembly and then presented to GrowthAid.

Visits to the communities allow GrowthAid to assess the extent of water, sanitation and hygiene needs as well as the prevalent diseases. The estimated beneficiary populations are also determined to ensure that the services eventually provided are optimally used.

The communities visited were, Nsutapong, Nsutapong-Sokwenya, Obonkorkor, Sutawa and Akpo.

The state of water in these communities visited were not of good condition for human consumption. These Communities rely on streams for water as well as dug out pits to store water for use whiles others must travel for more than 5km to buy water. Sanitation and Hygiene was not left out. These communities do not have places of convenience.
